How this calculator works
The Bass Reflex Port Calculator finds the physical length of a round vent for a given net box volume, tuning frequency (Fb), port diameter, and end correction. DIY speaker builders and subwoofer designers use it when moving from Thiele-Small alignment to a cut list for the port tube or PVC pipe.
The model treats the port as an acoustic mass resonating with box compliance at Fb. End correction adds effective length because real port ends are flanged or free. Driver displacement, box losses, and port compression are not fully modeled—verify tuning with impedance measurements or near-field sweeps when possible.
Formula used
Effective length: Leff = (c² × S) / (4π² × Fb² × Vb), with c ≈ 343 m/s, S = port area, Vb in m³. Physical length = Leff − (k × diameter), where k depends on flanged/free ends.
Example calculation
40 L net volume, Fb = 35 Hz, 80 mm internal diameter, one flanged end (k ≈ 0.732): the tool returns effective length, end correction, and physical length in mm. If physical length is negative or very long versus λ/4 at Fb, try a larger diameter, dual ports, or a slot port calculator.
Key terms
- Fb — tuning frequency where port mass and box compliance resonate.
- Vb — net internal air volume available to the driver.
- End correction — extra effective port length at the opening.
- Port velocity — keep air speed reasonable at peak excursion to avoid chuffing.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a bass reflex port calculator do? It estimates port length from box volume, tuning target, diameter, and end conditions for vented enclosures.
- How does port diameter affect port length? A wider port has more area, which shortens the required length for the same Fb and volume—but very wide ports can be impractical or need folding.
- What happens if the port is too small? Air velocity rises, risking turbulence and compression; tuning can shift. Increase area or use multiple ports.
- Why can real tuning differ from the calculated value? Box losses, driver leakage, stuffing, and measurement position change Fb. Build margin and measure.
